ARP 4754B – Systems & Equipment Development Assurance
Development methods and development assurance for civil-aviation airborne systems and equipment under ARP 4754B and AMC 20-189 — planning, requirements, verification, tool qualification (DO-330) and problem-report management.
Pedagogical Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the development assurance expectations within the framework of initial airworthiness.
- Describe the objectives and activities of the planning, development, verification, tool qualification and OPR management processes.
- Distinguish between the safety assessment methods set out in the ARP 4761A guidelines.
- Define the FDAL applicable to system functions and the IDAL applicable to the items implementing them.
Course Program
- Type certification and initial airworthiness.
- Development assurance fundamentals – “simple” and “complex” systems; controlling development errors: the DAL concept.
- The planning process and its objectives.
- The systems development process – the development life cycle; objectives & activities; distributed development.
- Capturing the operational need and validating it – correctness and completeness.
- Verification of the implementation (System, HW & SW).
- Tool qualification – qualification criteria and levels (TQL), DO-330 / ED-215.
- OPR management (AMC/AC 20-189) – classification: significant, functional, process, life-cycle data.
- The link with safety assessment (ARP 4761A) – system-level safety: SFHA, PSSA, SSA; common-cause analyses: ZSA, PRA, CMA.
- Configuration management.
- Development process assurance.
- Change management (systems) – categories (minor / major / STC); impact analyses.
Pedagogical Means
A digital course handbook is given to each learner. The session outline lists the methods used. The course is firmly practice-oriented: each key topic is followed by an individual or group application exercise.
Monitoring of Participants
Entry questionnaire, mid-course quiz, exit questionnaire, and a satisfaction questionnaire.
